Reproductive Traits of Non-avian Theropods
نویسنده
چکیده
The reproductive biology of non-avian theropods, primarily maniraptorans, is revisited using recent fossil discoveries in the framework of the extant phylogenetic bracket. It is apparent that non-avian theropods shared some reproductive characters with crocodilians, some with birds, but also possessed their own unique features. Whereas the non-avian theropod reproductive system retained primitive archosaurian traits (two functional oviducts, hyper-ellipsoidal eggs), it also possessed derived bird-like characteristics (released one ovum per oviduct, complex eggshell ultrastructures, asymmetrical eggs). Behaviourally, non-avian theropods were more derived than crocodilians in some respects: they laid orderly clutches and the adults were in direct contact with the eggs during the incubation period. However, non-avian theropods and enantiornithine birds, like crocodilians, did not rotate their eggs during the incubation period, which suggests that such a behaviour evolved in birds more derived than enantiornithines.

New Insights into Non-Avian Dinosaur Reproduction and Their Evolutionary and Ecological Implications: Linking Fossil Evidence to Allometries of Extant Close Relatives
It has been hypothesized that a high reproductive output contributes to the unique gigantism in large dinosaur taxa. In order to infer more information on dinosaur reproduction, we established allometries between body mass and different reproductive traits (egg mass, clutch mass, annual clutch mass) for extant phylogenetic brackets (birds, crocodiles and tortoises) of extinct non-avian dinosaur...
متن کاملWalking Like Dinosaurs: Chickens with Artificial Tails Provide Clues about Non-Avian Theropod Locomotion
Birds still share many traits with their dinosaur ancestors, making them the best living group to reconstruct certain aspects of non-avian theropod biology. Bipedal, digitigrade locomotion and parasagittal hindlimb movement are some of those inherited traits. Living birds, however, maintain an unusually crouched hindlimb posture and locomotion powered by knee flexion, in contrast to the inferre...
متن کاملReanalysis of Wupus agilis (Early Cretaceous) of Chongqing, China as a Large Avian Trace: Differentiating between Large Bird and Small Non-Avian Theropod Tracks
Trace fossils provide the only records of Early Cretaceous birds from many parts of the world. The identification of traces from large avian track-makers is made difficult given their overall similarity in size and tridactyly in comparison with traces of small non-avian theropods. Reanalysis of Wupus agilis from the Early Cretaceous (Aptian-Albian) Jiaguan Formation, one of a small but growing ...
متن کاملThe non-avian theropod quadrate I: standardized terminology with an overview of the anatomy and function
The quadrate of reptiles and most other tetrapods plays an important morphofunctional role by allowing the articulation of the mandible with the cranium. In Theropoda, the morphology of the quadrate is particularly complex and varies importantly among different clades of non-avian theropods, therefore conferring a strong taxonomic potential. Inconsistencies in the notation and terminology used ...
متن کاملEvolution of the respiratory system in nonavian theropods: evidence from rib and vertebral morphology.
Recent reports of region-specific vertebral pneumaticity in nonavian theropod dinosaurs have brought attention to the hypothesis that these animals possessed an avian-style respiratory system with flow-through ventilation. This study explores the thoracic rib and vertebral anatomy of Sinraptor, Allosaurus, Tyrannosaurus, and Deinonychus; four nonavian theropods that all show well-preserved thor...
